Brevoort was extremely touched when she heard the story of the women in the town of Lockerbie who had fought against American officials to be given the opportunity to wash, dry and return the clothing of the victims to their families. She saw it as a poignant gesture of closure and also of self-healing for a town that all of a sudden found themselves on the world stage for unluckily being the landing site of a large-scale terror attack.
Brevoort faced initial disinterest when she attempted to have her play produced, but this changed completely after the September 11 attacks and she found that her script was extremely relevant to a world that was now desperately trying to understand the hatred that had consumed it. Written in the style of a Greek tragedy, but using contemporary speech, The Women of Lockerbie was first produced Off-Broadway in the United States at the New Group and Women’s project in 2003. The play won the Kennedy Centre Fund for New American Plays (2001) and was the winner of the Silver Medal at the Onassis International Playwriting Competition (2001).
